Observation of Forbidden Magnetic Dipole Transitions Emitted from Highly Charged Argon in LHD Discharges

چکیده
Vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) and visible spectra have been measured using a 3 m normal incidence and two 50 cm Czerny-Turner spectrometers with CCD detectors, respectively, in order to observe forbidden magnetic dipole (M1) transitions in 2s22px (x = 1 to 5) ground and 2s2p excited configurations of highly charged argon produced in argon discharges of Large Helical Device (LHD). One of observed VUV lines was precisely identified as an M1 transition of Ar XII (2s22p3 S3/2 − P3/2 : 649.03 ± 0.02 Å) by analyzing Doppler broadening. Four M1 transitions of Ar X (2s22p5 2P3/2−2P1/2 : 5533 Å), Ar XI (2s22p4 3P2−3P1 : 6917 Å), Ar XIV (2s22p P1/2 − P3/2 : 4413 Å) and Ar XV (2s2p P1 − P2 : 5944 Å) have been observed in the visible spectral region. Temporal behaviors of the VUV and visible lines were examined for reliable identification, and a clear difference was confirmed in comparison with those of Ar lines in lower-ionized stages. Wavelengths of the obtained M1 transitions were determined with high accuracy and compared with previous experimental and calculated values.

High precision wavelength measurements of QED-sensitive forbidden transitions in highly charged argon ions.
We present the results of an experimental study of magnetic dipole (M1) transitions in highly charged argon ions (Ar X, Ar XI, Ar XIV, Ar XV) in the visible spectral range using an electron beam ion trap. Their wavelengths were determined with, for highly charged ions, unprecedented accuracy up to the sub-ppm level and compared with theoretical calculations. The QED contributions, calculated in...
متن کاملMagnetic-dipole transitions in highly charged ions as a basis of ultraprecise optical clocks.
We evaluate the feasibility of using magnetic-dipole (M1) transitions in highly charged ions as a basis of an optical atomic clockwork of exceptional accuracy. We consider a range of possibilities, including M1 transitions between clock levels of the same fine-structure and hyperfine-structure manifolds. In highly charged ions these transitions lie in the optical part of the spectra and can be ...
متن کاملIdentification and Plasma Diagnostics Study of Extreme Ultraviolet Transitions in Highly Charged Yttrium
Extreme ultraviolet spectra of the L-shell ions of highly charged yttrium (Y26+–Y36+) were observed in the electron beam ion trap of the National Institute of Standards and Technology using a flat-field grazing-incidence spectrometer in the wavelength range of 4 nm-20 nm. The electron beam energy was systematically varied from 2.3 keV–6.0 keV to selectively produce different ionization stages. ...
متن کاملNew possible manifestations of parity violation in forbidden magnetic transitions : chiral absorption of plane polarized light and circular dichroism in crossed transverse dc electric and magnetic fields
2014 In this paper, we shall present new approaches to the problem of finding a parity violation in forbidden magnetic transitions of heavy atoms. The basic principle is the observation of an interference between the electric dipole amplitude induced by the parity violating neutral currents interaction and the stark induced electric dipole amplitude in nS ~ n’ S radiative transitions. The new f...
متن کاملEffect of metallic surface on electric dipole and magnetic dipole emission transitions in Eu3+ doped polymeric film.
Spontaneous emission of Eu(3+) ions is studied in thin organic films deposited onto several different substrates. It has been demonstrated that the presence of a metallic surface in close vicinity to emitting Eu(3+) ions causes modifications of their spontaneous emission spectra, in particular, the change in the relative strengths of magnetic-dipole and electric-dipole transitions. The characte...
